The Nommie Rules

We have decided to host our own food blog awards here at Om-Nom-Nomnivore. The long-winded and official title is The Om-Nom-Nomnivore Awards for Excellence in Food Blogging, however we like to refer to them as the Nommies. You can too, it's ok.

The Nommies will be awarded six times each year and will go to the best food blog posts over the past two months. Overall, bloggers will be nominated based on a single post but the entire site does get judged in the process... so practice safe blogging kids!

Any food blog entry is fair game, as long as a cooking/prep process of some sort or another is featured, and is not a corporate website for some brand. Amature and semi-ammatures only. Your post detailing the process of gathering and preparing truffels? Good to go. But the post about your trip to the local Starbucks to kivitch with a friend? Not so much. Of course the further out on the fringe of the foodie-scene you are the greater your writing will have to be to make an impression.

So here are the details on this amazing award:

  1. PROCESS:
    1. Nominations: Any reader of Om-Nom-Nomnivore can nominate any food blog post (subject to all other rules here).
    2. First Round: Gecko and I will post a list of 8 blog posts from the previous month (post must have been written w/in previous 30 days of the First Round) and a poll will be created for anyone to vote for their favorites.
      1. This round will take the first two weeks of the competition.
    3. Second Round: The top four will be judged by both Gecko and I along the lines below. Scores will be tallied and totalled.
      1. This round will take the third week of the competition.
    4. Winners Announced.
  2. JUDGING
    1. Writing - the style and tone of writing. Food blogging should be casual and not strained or stressed. Does the bloggist sound like they are in the kitchen with some old friends chatting or are they hammering out an English thesis?
    2. Photography - The food or prep process should be front and center and highlighted in an eye-catching way. Does the photographic style support the food on display and the writing describing it?
    3. Recipe - Is the presentation clear, easy to read and engaging?
    4. Blog - The site overall... is it cluttered? Pop-up ads in the way? Things flow smoothly and easy to find?
    5. Each item above is scored from 1-20 points with an average score being about 12. 20's should be nearly impossible to get and will be awarded rarely if ever.
  3. THE AWARD
    1. Unlike most internet awards the Nommy is an actual trophy (thingy, kinda) that all bloggists will be fighting to own. We'll be showcasing one in the next few days so pay attention!

Our goal here is to reward foodies who are pouring their hearts and souls out on the web. We're looking for an overall sense that the entire site works together and just flows. Prior to each First Round we'll be posting a thread in the forums for you to nominate a blog post (hell, even one of your own!) for this maybe-soon-to-be-fought-over award.
